...yeah, yeah I know I'm like months behind. But when you have a little one and limited access to baby-sitters you miss out on movies. Don't get me started on how disappointed I am about not catching RUSH in the theaters. Anyway, Pacific Rim was exactly what I expected, and I enjoyed every minute.

I was months late with this one as well... For entirely different reasons, but still. I liked it, but for whatever reason, I just can't get past the most basic of the basic facts in the movie, which is the existence of giant robots. Whatever weapons they had that could take the Kaiju down, those could easily have been installed in the walls protecting the cities, or, even better, fighter jets and bombers. I know they stated at the very beginning that conventional weaponry wouldn't work and nuclear strikes would be too much for the environment, but in the end the Jaegers were nothing more than weapon platforms, with plasma cannons, anti kaiju missiles and swords, and I can't help but think that any other machine with the same weaponry but without the handicap that are arms and legs and a detachable head and an overall human shape would have been far more effective. :p

Agreed. And I was all like, why don't they deploy the sword from the start of the fight? It is way more effective than fists...but with these types of movies I try to turn my brain off and just enjoy the effects.

There's a service out there that will let you stream movies right from the theater, same day.

Just buy their little box for $30k, and you'll never have to wait for Blu-rays again!

I had that exact same thought towards the end of the movie. They literally kill off a class IV Kaiju in less than 5 seconds just by slicing it in half, after almost being wrecked by another class IV earlier on.

WUT...30 dollars or 30 Thousand dollars? If the latter there are several vehicles I'd rather purchase. I like movies...but I like cars more.

And if blade type weapons are the most effective why not have projectile bladed weapons to kill Kaiju from a distance? Like massive Ninja stars or something, I mean that Chinese Jager had four arms with blades you would think at least two of them could be launched.

Good point, I imagine "bladed" drones, that could be used as projectiles once the target had been locked on, would have a field day chopping them to pieces.

Duuuuude. Bladed drones...that is awesome. So that would make the movie not nearly as entertaining. But, if giant alien monsters emerge from the sea you and I will meet with our respective governments and SAVE THE WORLD!

Giant robots fighting giant dinosaur-things = superbly mindless entertainment. Except for the absence of T&A it was darn near perfect.

Haha, true. I think the problem with any kind of "biohazard" movie, be it zombies, aliens or giant monsters, is that humans can wipe out entire species eithout even trying. We're just too good at killing.

And I just realized that's scary as hell...

Anyways, on a more positive note, I know how we could still make a movie out of that: Racecars. Everything is better with racecars. We could have different styles of cars (muscle, compacts, supercars, etc) in racing trim in order to launch and retrieve the drones. Sure, it's not as practical as launching them from a base, but let's see a Class IV Kaiju fatass smackdown on a Corvette doing over 200 mph on post apocalyptic streets.

Actually, I lied. The box is $35k.

and each movie is - just for one movie - $500. $600 for 3D.

Even if I were a megarich saudi, I don't think I could sleep well at night knowing I paid $500 for the privilege of seeing 'The Ghost of Girlfriend's Past' before everyone else.

Edit: Did I mention that the $500/$600 is good for only one 24h showing?

Just when the little people get old enough to start seeing "real" movies that don't have Pony in the title you don't start back to the theater. Instead you have to bring them up to speed on the back catalog. First comes Star Wars, Empire and Jedi. Then Indy. What next? For us it was Ghostbusters for our 6 year old. He loved it. A couple of modern films like Transformers made it in around the classics and age appropriate kids stuff (we have Pixar covered and all that). We are on vacation for the week and I snuck Jurassic Park into the pile of DVDs we brought. It was that or Wrath of Khan.

I thought Pacific Rim was entertaining. If you saw any of the interviews with Del Toro you know what you are getting
into. It wasn't intended to be War
And Piece. It was intended to be fun.

Jurassic Park was pretty intense. The effects of that film still look pretty good today.

I remember the first time I watched, it must have been about thirty minutes or so into the movie. I realized that I was looking past the dinosaurs and waiting for the special effects to start. Yeah, they are really amazing. even today.

While my Anime exposure is fairly limited, I could tell that there was a lot of inspiration take from that genre.

Do what I did, borrower the DVD from the library. One of the local branches even has a version of a "Redbox". Just swipe your library card, and select from the available movies. My son & I borrowed Pacific Rim, Man of Steel, Star Trek Into Darkness, Iron Man III and Despicable Me, today for $0.00.

My son & I just watched it tonight. He was less than thrilled, actually. He thought there was too much talking, not enough monsters & robots fighting. I liked it, for the mind candy that it is supposed to be. I'm glad I borrowed it from our local library, however, as free movies are the best.
